This temple was built during the era of the Second White Rajah of Sarawak, Sir Charles Brooke in the 1860s by the Tea Plantation workers from South India. This beautiful terrain at Mount Matang was marveled as the most pleasant place for hill retreat by the Rajah.
Today, one of the buildings which remained intact on this mountain slope is this Hindu Temple which is dedicated to the Goddess Sri Maha Mariamman. This is where the earliest known Hindu shrine in Sarawak was discovered and perhaps the only abode of ‘Sri Maha Mariamman’ in the Southeast Asia made of iron wood (belian).
Drive for 40 mins to the foot of Mount Matang. Begin your moderate walk up the jungle trail (3km) and enjoy the cool and congenial atmosphere at the upper slopes of the mountain. The walk ends at 1,000 feet above sea level at the site of this 150 year old temple. Visit temple and learn about the history and culture.
