Sarawak’s first marine national park, Talang – Satang was established with the primary aim of conserving Sarawak’s marine turtle population and it covers a total land area of approximately 19,400 hectares.
The Sarawak Sea Turtle Volunteer Programme is a unique eco-tourism initiative run by Sarawak Forestry. Open from May till September, this conservation programme allows volunteers to actively participate in Sarawak’s turtle conservation efforts by spending 4 days at the turtle conservation station on Talang – Talang island. It offers participants a chance to learn more about turtle conservation and an unforgettable experience.
Itinerary:
Day 1 Kuching / Talang – Talang Island / Turtle watching
Morning, depart on a overland drive to Sematan jetty and then board boat to Talang – Talang island. Upon arrival at island, meet and proceed for a welcome briefing by Park Warden. Check into accommodation. After dinner, proceed for turtle watch. Overnight at guesthouse. (Dinner included)
Day 2 Conservation work at Talang – Talang island
Full day conservation works with the Turtle Management team. Overnight at guesthouse. (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner included)
Day 3 Conservation work at Talang – Talang Island
Full day conservation works with the Turtle Management team. Overnight at guesthouse. (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner included)
Day 4 Talang – Talang Island / Kuching
After breakfast, proceed for briefing with Turtle Management before departing island by boat to Sematan jetty and continue overland drive to Kuching. Transfer back to your hotel. (Breakfast included)
Duties / activities include:
• Beach patrolling to locate turtle arrivals
• Transferring turtle eggs to hatchery
• Releasing of hatchlings
• Data recording
• Nest analysis (monitoring turtle nesting activities)
• Research, education and conservation activities
** What to bring – Disposable raincoat, pullover, cap, sun block lotion, insect repellent, drinking water, flashlight, Towel, swim wear, sun glasses, flip flops, sandals, personal toiletries & items of personal use. Comfortable cotton T-shirts with long or short pants. Plastic bags to keep clothes and cameras dry in case of rain, own medication. There are no shops on the island so please pack your own snacks before arriving to island.
** Avoid bringing heavy and big luggage as there is no jetty or pier at the island.
Remarks: After completion of program, a certificate from Sarawak Forestry will be given to participants. Max of 6 persons per trip. This trip is only available from May – Sept 2018.
Note: In accordance to the Malaysian Tourism Tax Act 2017, with effect from 1st Sep 2017, all foreign tourists will be charged a flat rate of RM10 per room per night in any registered tourist accommodation premises and this is collected directly by the hotels/resorts/lodges upon check in. The Tourism Tax (TTx) is mandatory under Malaysian Law. Tourism Tax is not included in this package.
