Day 1 Sandakan / Sepilok Orang Utan / Kinabatangan River Cruise
Morning, pick up from your hotel in Sandakan or Sandakan Airport and transfer to Sepilok Orang Utan Centre. Founded in 1964 the Centre helps once captive orang utans learn to climb and fend for themselves in the wild with the hope that one day they may return to the forest. The semi-wild orang utans may return to the platform provided by the Centre for milk and bananas twice a day during the process of returning to the forest. Visitors will get a close up view of these orang utans and have the chance to photograph them at close range. Depart for lunch at a local restaurant.
After lunch, overland drive to Bilit, Kinabatangan river where the greatest concentration of wildlife in Malaysia and possibly all of Borneo, can be found. Check into accommodation. Late afternoon, depart on a cruise along the Kinabatangan river to spot wildlife. Dinner and overnight at Bilit Adventure Lodge. (Lunch / Dinner included)
Day 2 River Cruise / Gomantong caves / City Tour
Early morning, depart on a river cruise to spot some wildlife. Return to lodge for breakfast. Depart Bilit and proceed to Gomantong cave to explore the largest limestone and birds nest cave in Sabah.
After lunch depart for Sandakan city tour with a visit to the Sandakan Memorial Park, which is adjacent to the site of the original Sandakan POW camp. The park commemorates the sacrifice and suffering endured by both the Australian and British soldiers who were led by the Japanese as Prisoners of War between 1942 and 1945. Proceed to the Central Market where produce from the hinterland and fresh seafood are on sales here. The market is also the focal point for socialising among the locals. Drive up to the ChineseTemple located on a hill where you can see the colourful interior decoration of this magnificent temple with a commanding view. Continue the journey to St.Michael’s Church where you can see a colonial style building where Christianity is preached. Visit the Agnes Keith museum to learn about the life in the colonial days of Agnes and Harry Keith. Harry was the first conservator of the Forestry Department in Sabah. Transfer back to your hotel or Sandakan Airport. (Breakfast/Lunch included)
** What to bring – Disposable raincoat, cap, sunblock lotion, insect repellent, drinking water, flashlight, leech socks, swim wear, bath towel, personal toiletries & items of personal use. Use good walking shoes and bring a pair of flat walking sandal. Comfortable cotton T-shirts with long or short pants recommended.
** Do not wear bright colour clothing such as red or yellow. Keep your belongings safe in your bag and avoid wearing jewellery especially dangling ones. No food is allowed in the reserve
